Drywall Hanging & Finishing · Westmont, IL

Drywall Installation & Finishing in Westmont, IL

Hang, tape, mud and sand — flat walls ready for primer.

New drywall is where a remodel either reads as finished work or as something that got boarded over. Board that has been hung with tight joints on properly spaced framing takes three coats of compound and sands flat. Board that has been hung carelessly — gaps at the butt joints, fasteners proud of the face, factory edges in the wrong places — takes compound forever and still shows a ripple down the wall when you turn a light on it.

We hang and finish drywall for room additions, wall removals and reframes, basement projects, garage ceilings, closets, soffits and whole-room rebuilds in Westmont and across DuPage County. We also come in behind other trades on jobs where the framing, plumbing or electrical is somebody else's and the drywall is ours — tell us which it is when you call so we quote the right scope.

What installation and finishing covers

  • Hanging board on walls and ceilings, with joints laid out to minimize visible butt seams
  • Taping and three coats of joint compound, feathered and sanded between coats
  • Metal and bullnose corner bead on outside corners
  • Soffits and boxing around ductwork, beams and plumbing runs
  • Board selection discussed at the estimate — moisture-resistant where humidity is a factor, fire-rated where village code calls for it
  • Smooth finish, or texture matched to the rest of the house
  • Walls left sanded, dusted and ready for primer — or primed and painted by the same crew
  • Cutouts for boxes, cans, registers and fixtures

Local Detail

Permits, board types and old framing

Many villages around Westmont — Downers Grove, Hinsdale and Naperville among them — require contractor registration and a permit for structural remodeling and for drywall replacement past a certain scope, and the rules are genuinely not the same from one town to the next. Bring it up when you call and we will go through what your village expects for your particular project before work is scheduled.

The other thing worth knowing about older DuPage homes is that framing from before the 1970s is often not on a modern layout, and it has usually moved. Studs sit at odd spacing, ceiling joists crown, and an old plaster wall coming out leaves a surface nothing will sit flat against. Furring, shimming and sistering to get a plane worth boarding is part of the job in those houses, and we would rather price it honestly than discover it with the board already on the truck.

Our Process

How an installation job runs

  1. Measure and check the framing

Before we quote board we look at what it is going on. Spacing, plane, crowned joists and anything that needs furring or shimming gets priced in, not sprung on you later.

  2. Hang

Board cut and set with tight joints, fasteners driven just below the face, seams planned so the hardest ones land where they are least visible. Cutouts made as we go.

  3. Tape and finish

Tape, then coats with drying time between each, each one wider than the last. Sanded flat and checked with a light held along the wall, which is the only honest test.

  4. Texture or prime

Smooth, or textured to match the rest of the house. Then dusted down and either handed over ready for primer or primed and painted by us.

FAQ

Drywall Installation & Finishing questions

Straight answers, including the ones where the honest answer is 'it depends'.
Do you hang drywall as well as finish it, or just one or the other?
Both, together or separately. Plenty of our work is finishing board that a general contractor or a homeowner has already hung. Tell us which part you need and we will quote that part.
What finish level should I ask for?
For living space that is getting painted with a flat or eggshell sheen, a standard three-coat smooth finish is right. If you are going to a gloss, or a wall gets strong raking light from a window or a stairwell fixture, it needs more work than that to look flat, and we will say so at the estimate.
Do I need a permit?
Often, yes — it depends on your village and the scope. Structural changes and larger drywall replacement commonly need one around here. Call (779) 939-9711 and describe the project, and we will go over what your town requires before anything starts.
How much dust should I expect?
Sanding compound makes fine dust and some of it travels. We seal openings, cover what stays in the room and clean down at the end of each day, but on a larger job it is honest to expect dust in the work area until the sanding is finished.
